![]() ![]() At its heart, it's a story of life and hope.įrontier fiction fans rejoice! Here’s a novel that doesn’t smooth history’s ragged edges with a 21st century file. It's history to be learned from, warts and all.īut most of all, this is a story of ordinary people, caught up in an extraordinary time, and how they overcome in spite of everything. ![]() It does no good to look at history through the modern lens. It was not my intent to interject 21st-century norms or ideals into the 18th century. ![]() I hope to give the reader a glimpse of what happened in a time and place that was incredibly volatile from the perspective of the people caught up it in unawares. ![]() Sarah's Choice does not present all sides of the conflict, instead, it is seen only through the eyes of Sarah and Cully. It was a harsh, even brutal event in American history, and I knew it would provide the backdrop that Sarah's story needed. I just knew it happened on the frontier.īecause I'd recently researched Pontiac's Rebellion for a novella, it was fresh in my mind. (For the record, that's never happened before or since.) At first, I didn't know the setting, only her story. Sarah's story came to me all in one piece. It gives me a chance to share a bit about the book and why I wrote it. I love that Goodreads lets authors review their own books. ![]()

Some glossed-over twists stretch believability, though the threat (and villain’s secret plan), smaller-scale than in Starters, is personal in a creepy way. Predictably, there is a raid, and all except Callie, Hyden and Michael are conveniently captured, launching an action-oriented rescue storyline and a series of plot twists. The developing romance stays in the background, as Callie and Hyden set about keeping the Metals from his father in the slow first half. Genius Hyden, who helped develop the chips, explains how to block the signals his father uses to track and control Metals. He commands Callie to meet him, but she’s intercepted and rescued by a boy claiming to be the Old Man’s son. Then the first book’s main villain, the Old Man, reaches out to her to demonstrate the deadly danger the chips pose if the chip-implanted teenagers, Metals, don’t obey him. Using an inheritance from Helena, the elderly woman who rented Callie’s body in Starters (2012), Callie’s carved out a life and safety for herself, her younger brother and her best friend, Michael. Teenagers with microchips that enable people to borrow their bodies evade those who would use them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Swan Book has all the qualities which made Wright’s previous novel, Carpentaria, a prize-winning best-seller. It follows the life of a mute young woman called Oblivia, the victim of gang-rape by petrol-sniffing youths, from the displaced community where she lives in a hulk, in a swamp filled with rusting boats, and thousands of black swans, to her marriage to Warren Finch, the first Aboriginal president of Australia, and her elevation to the position of First Lady, confined to a tower in a flooded and lawless southern city. Though language models like ChatGPT are still in the infancy stage of development, their emergence has nevertheless generated a range of advanced discussions and debates among researchers involved in the field of language acquisition. It is a chatbot released in November 2022, and, according to OpenAI’s website, its “dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer followup questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.” The model also involves a number of serious limitations, however, which are also mentioned on OpenAI’s homepage. The recent emergence of OpenAI’s ChatGPT (part of the Generative Pre-trained Transformer family of language models) has attracted a lot of attention throughout the world. The publication of Silent Spring led to an increased public awareness of humanity’s impact on nature and is credited as the beginning of the modern environmental movement, leading to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970 and the banning of DDT in 1972. While noting the benefits of pesticides in fighting insect-borne disease and boosting crop yields, Carson warned about the invisible dangers of indiscriminate insecticide use and its unintended effect on nature.
